Luis Martinez was a professor at the Faculty of Sports Sciences at the University of Vigo in Spain. It was there that he met Valery Karpin when he played for the local club Celta. He first came to work in Russia in 2013, joining Karpin's coaching staff at Spartak.
He later worked at Chinese Hebei and Mexican Atlas. In 2018, he returned to Russia, reuniting with Karpin at Rostov. Since July 2021, he has been the physical training coach of the Russian national team.
