Team status
In their first game of the tournament, Dynamo defeated Shanghai Shenhua in a spectacular penalty shootout (2-2, 5-3). The goals were scored by Bitello, who converted a cross from Juan Caceres, and Ivan Sergeev, who scored early in the second half from a pass by Georgy Tikhomirov. The 19-year-old center back came in as a defensive midfielder and scored 30 seconds into his senior debut.
The young attacking trio of Viktor Okishor, Gleb Miroshnichenko, and Aleksandr Khubulov, along with Sergeev and Anton Miranchuk, were particularly troubling for their more experienced opponents. Incidentally, all five confidently converted their attempts in the shootout.
New signing David Ricardo was not included in the match squad, but after the game he said he hoped to help the team on the field in the very near future.
About the opponent
Chengdu Rongcheng doesn't boast the same illustrious history as Shanghai Shenhua, as the club was founded only in March 2018. The team quickly advanced through the divisions and debuted in the Chinese Super League in 2022, immediately finishing fifth. A year later, they were fourth, and in the last two seasons, the team from the city of hibiscus and pandas finished third in the standings.
Last season, Chengdu debuted in the Asian Champions League and performed even better than their Chinese league rivals, but still failed to qualify for the playoffs. In the league, Chengdu Rongcheng finished four points behind Leonid Slutsky's team and boasted the league's most solid defense (28 goals conceded in 30 matches).
All of the club's successes have been attributed to the work of Korean coach Seo Jong-won over the past five years. However, in the winter, management did not renew his contract, awarding him the title of "Honorary Head Coach." In reality, the team was taken over by John Aloisi, a former Australian national team forward and the team's fourth-highest goalscorer in history. This will be the 49-year-old coach's first experience coaching abroad.
In attack, he will likely rely on proven Brazilians Rômulo and Felipe Silva, who have been with Chengdu since 2021. Moreover, in January, they were joined by two compatriots: Wellington Silva, who played in La Liga, and Matheus Joussa, a two-time Chinese champion with Shanghai Port.
