A legendary figure in Russian football. Playing for FC Dynamo, he shone in the 1980s as a scorer and versatile attacking player. He had good speed, technique and a shot with both feet. He did a lot of work on the field, so he was always very useful.

One of his advantages was his technique with the ball: he could quickly receive a pass from deep and break through to the goal. In addition to speed and technical skills, he was distinguished by a subtle sense of the game, reading complex episodes and a sense of goal. He always competently and correctly chose the most advantageous position. As part of Dynamo, he twice became the top scorer of the USSR championship.

After Dynamo, he continued to play in Germany, where he spent several seasons in the 1990s. In the late 1990s, he returned to Russia and became a player for Lokomotiv Moscow. He ended his career in Krylia Sovetov Samara at the age of 39.

He began his coaching career there, in Samara, after which he joined the coaching staff of the Russian national team, where he was an assistant to Guus Hiddink and Dick Advocaat. In 2012, he was the sports director of Dynamo. In the mid-2010s, he returned to coaching, and managed to work in Kazakhstan and Austria. In recent years, he managed Torpedo Moscow and was senior coach of the Lokomotiv Academy.
