A graduate of the Lev Yashin Club Academy. Shunin's first coach was Vladimir Vladimirovich Kozlov. Valery Kleymenov, Nikolai Gontar and Sergei Ovchinnikov had a great influence on his development as a goalkeeper.
In 2002 and 2003, he won the reserve tournament with the team led by Sergei Silkin. At the same time, he began to be called up to the youth teams of Russia and Moscow.
He made his debut for the main team on April 21, 2007, in a Russian championship match against Khimki. In total, in his first season for Dynamo, he played 25 matches, in which he conceded 33 goals. That same year, he played for the Russian national team for the first time, entering the field in the second half of a friendly match with the Poles.
He finally secured his status as the number one goalkeeper for the white-blues in the 2016/17 season, in which he also became the team captain. In September 2020, in a match against Akhmat, he played his 100th clean sheet for Dynamo, and in April 2022, he joined the Lev Yashin Club. That same season, he won bronze medals in the Russian Championship for the second time.
In June 2021, he took part in the European Championship as part of the Russian national team.
In December 2023, he surpassed Lev Yashin in the number of matches for Dynamo. He played his last match for the white-blues on April 28, 2024. In May 2025, he officially retired from playing.
