A product of the Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, he was one of a galaxy of bright Russian footballers who played in Europe in the 1990s. He started his career at Dynamo under the leadership of Valeriy Gazzaev, and in 1994 and 1995 he played under Konstantin Beskov. He was famous for his speed and good run, combined with a technical strike.
He had a good technique for receiving the ball, which allowed him to quickly handle the ball and get away from defenders at high speed. He did not stand out for his combination play, but he was excellent at breaking through the opponent's defense and opening up for incisive passes behind his back. He had a well-placed strike, and often threatened the goal from outside the penalty area.
After Dynamo, he went to Spain, where he played for clubs in different divisions and ended his career there in 2003. In the mid-2000s, his son, Denis Cheryshev, entered the football academy of Real Madrid, so he decided to stay in the capital of Spain and become a coach. Having received a Pro license, he worked with the Real's children's teams. In 2010, he returned to Russia, where he headed several different teams.
