Earlier this week, Dynamo suffered a 1–2 away defeat to Krasnodar in a thrilling cup encounter, allowing their opponents to take the top spot in Group B. Konstantin Tyukavin scored the team’s only goal, moving to within one strike of entering the top 10 all-time leading goalscorers for Dynamo.

"That’s football — you can’t win every single time. I’d rather focus on the performance, which was good — both during the second half against Akron and again today. We’re pleased with the team’s fighting spirit, the number of chances created, and our entries into the penalty area. We just lacked that final pass or the decisive touch needed to score more goals," said assistant coach Volkan Bulut after the match.

Following two defeats to Dynamo in the group stage of the Cup — with an aggregate score of 1–5 — Akhmat lost to Fakel on penalties (0–0, 1–3) this Tuesday. This result has made their path to the tournament’s knockout stage significantly more difficult, as they have now dropped to the bottom of their group.

Things are not going much better for the Grozny-based side in the league; in six autumn rounds, they have managed only one victory — a win in the Caucasian derby against the team from Makhachkala. Since then, they have suffered three defeats in four matches, scoring just two goals — both in St. Petersburg, where Akhmat appeared to have salvaged a draw thanks to a late goal from Mohamed Konaté, only to concede immediately afterward and ultimately lose to Zenit (2–3). In the most recent round, they lost 0–1 at home to Orenburg, managing to pose a real threat to the visitors only in the final 15 minutes of the match.

"We aren't doing figure skating; artistry doesn't earn you any points. Looking at our performances against Dynamo and Zenit, I can say that we have become significantly stronger. The challenge now is to translate that into actual results — if we don't, we simply won't pick up any points," said Stanislav Cherchesov following the match against Orenburg.

Meanwhile, the injury list for the Grozny side is not particularly extensive: Júlio Romão has been sidelined since mid-October, and Ousmane Ndong has traveled to Serbia for a medical examination.

Stanislav Cherchesov coached Dynamo in 2014-2015, and with him the team won 6 out of 6 matches in the group stage of the Europa League.

Blue and white coach Sergei Parshivlyuk and Akhmat striker Georgy Melkadze played together for Spartak-2 in 2016.

Akhmat midfielder Abakar Gadzhiev is a graduate of the Dynamo Academy branch in Makhachkala.

In the Russian championships, the advantage is on our side: 13 wins, 11 losses and 12 draws. The goal difference is 44:36 in favor of the blue and whites.

The top scorers of the confrontation are: Kevin Kuranyi (6 goals), Konstantin Tyukavin (4 goals) and Igor Semshov (3 goals).

Sergey Karasev will officiate the match along with linesmen Alexey Lunev and Alexander Pavlov. Evgeny Bulanov and Jan Bobrovsky will be responsible for the video assistance to referees (VAR) system.

Last season, the 47-year-old judge from Moscow served only one match of the blue and whites, in which they lost at home to Rubin Kazan (0:1).
