The head coach of the blue and whites Sandro Schwarz answered journalists' questions after the match with Orenburg (1:0).
– It was clear we wouldn't have an easy time against Orenburg, a team that had lost only one match in seven rounds. We started well, created several chances, and could have scored much earlier. We missed a penalty early in the second half, and things weren't quite going our way, but then Vitya took a risk and shot from distance—and scored. We deserved this win; we deserved that bit of luck. I’m very proud of the lads and how they played today, especially coming off those derby wins. I’m delighted we’ve taken another important step forward.
– Did you expect Orenburg to focus so heavily on defense? How did you plan to break it down?
– It was mentally tough for us after missing those chances and the penalty. Of course, we could have played better, especially in the final third, but overall we controlled the game, with 75% possession. Yes, the opposition had a brief spell where they managed a few shots on our goal. But I always tell the lads that if you keep a clean sheet and stick to your game plan, a scoring opportunity will eventually come along. That’s exactly what happened today.
– Regarding the penalty incident: the referee initially showed the Orenburg defender a red card but then changed it to a yellow. What are your thoughts on that decision?
– I suppose that’s what the rules dictate. It was a clear penalty. The referee initially showed a red card but changed his decision after the video review. It wasn't easy to keep our composure after missing the penalty, but it’s great that we managed to do so and ultimately break the opposition down.
– Maximiliano Gutiérrez made his RPL debut. How would you assess his physical condition?
– He has completed three training sessions with us, and it’s clear he is a quality player who is good on the ball. Now he needs to adapt to our playing principles and intensity. But based on these first few days, I can say he looked great and conducted himself very professionally. I am very happy he has joined our team.
– Even though Orenburg played a good match, you managed to break down their packed defense. What was missing to score more goals?
– You always have to try to create more chances. When playing against teams that defend very deep and aggressively, it’s important to score an early goal. Although we didn't manage that, it was great that we controlled the game and didn't allow the opponent to launch quick counter-attacks. Winning a match like this is a very good step forward in our team's development.
– Which member of your coaching staff was sent off at the end of the game?
– It was an emotional moment for everyone. Our fitness coach, Andrey Gorbanets, received a red card. Things like that happen in situations like that. He’s a great guy and a hardworking professional. It ended up being one-all in terms of red cards, so everything is fine.
– After the next round, there is a three-week break for international matches. Are you preparing for that yet?
– Right now, our entire focus is on the upcoming match against Rostov. Yes, we already have a clear plan for those three weeks, but for the moment, we need to concentrate on putting in our best performance next Thursday in Rostov-on-Don.
