Valery Karpin answered numerous questions from journalists and fans at his first big press conference as head coach of Dynamo Moscow.
— When did you finally decide that you would accept Dynamo's invitation?
— When we were in Novogorsk with the national team, this decision was ripe. The tasks were clear from the very beginning, God grant that we come to them. For me and Dynamo, the process is also important – what and how we will play, what the club's management and fans want to see. It is important not only that we want to win trophies, but also how to get to them. There were many nuances that needed to be discussed and agreed upon right away, so that later there would be no incomprehensible situations. We talked a lot, got each other's opinion. I made the decision earlier, but I probably drove him away before the end of the match with Belarus.
— Will the team captain be chosen by the players or appointed by the head coach?
— Yesterday we discussed with the staff who could apply for this role. We still need to look at the team, who has what weight not only on the field, but also in the locker room. So the decision will be made about a week before the start of the season. So far I'm leaning towards voting, but maybe my opinion will change in three weeks.
— You noted that not only the result is important, but also the game. Is the current Dynamo squad suitable for your football?
— Globally, yes, but you need to train the players for some time to understand exactly. For example, football players came to Rostov who were not ready to play the football that we demanded. A year later they played it. If the players want and can, they will do it. Acquisitions are made not for me, but for the team. For example, negotiations on Maxim Osipenko began long before me.

— How much have you tightened discipline in the team? Is there a penalty waiting for Jorge Carrascal, who has not yet arrived at the location of the team?
— We have only spent one day together so far, so there were no fines. All fines are written in the contracts, and the club will apply them. If Carrascal is late for the training camp, he will be punished according to the contract.
— In recent days, experts on Match TV have begun to criticize the combination of your posts in the club and the national team. Is this a coincidence or a targeted campaign?
— I even know where this campaign is coming from. You yourself have named which channel it is on. Everything is clear here. Let it be on their conscience.
— You have been working with the same coaching staff at Rostov for a long time. How did you assemble it at Dynamo?
— I got acquainted with all the coaching staff that was here. I talked to everyone about the functions they can perform at my headquarters. So far so.
— Do you admit that there may still be changes in the coaching staff?
— Everything can be, of course.
— At Rostov, you always said that the primary task for the season was not to be relegated. Now the task is to become a champion, how difficult is it for you to rebuild?
— I don't need to rebuild. Yes, the first task of Rostov was this, but then we had to fight for the highest possible place. Here, the tasks do not need to be designated, they are already clear, so it's even easier for me. It is more difficult when you get from a team fighting for the championship to a team that is trying not to fly out. It's the opposite here.

— Your playing style is somewhat reminiscent of the Dynamo game under Sandro Schwartz. Do you see these similarities? Have you talked to Sandro?
— We have always had a great relationship with him. When I was only the coach of the national team, we discussed the game of Dynamo and Rostov in Turkey. He asked how, for example, I managed to get the extreme attackers to press so hard. For a long time we discussed the 4-3-3 formation with him, what were the differences in Rostov and Dynamo. We sat with him for a long time, parted very well. Sandro wrote to me, congratulated me on my appointment and wrote: finally I will see 4-3-3 in Dynamo. In general, many people wrote -congratulated – from those with whom I am not personally familiar, Alexander Ovechkin congratulated.
— Ovechkin has already played for Dynamo in a friendly match with Amkal. If there is such an opportunity this summer, will you let him out on the field? Will it be tested for sugar and fats?
— We will not test for sure, since he will not pass this test. I'll let him out if he arranges for me to play for the Washington Capitals (smiles).
— You have often been asked about the matches between the national team and the team from the media league. Now Dynamo will play with 2Drots, what are your emotions from this game?
— There are definitely no emotions from this. The media League is a good project, a lot of people go to it, they talk a lot about football – I feel good about it. I said about the national team that it should not play with them or with professional clubs in the current situation. This is possible when you are preparing for an official competition, but when they are not, the national team has to play against the national teams.
The fact that clubs are playing against media teams is great. Playing friendly matches with full stands is much more enjoyable than with empty ones. It is clear that for the first game, coaches usually ask the opponent for a lower level. Therefore, the best team of the media league in terms of level corresponds to somewhere in the Second league, with teams from which Rostov often played. This is normal.

— How was the meeting with the team? Are there any overweight players?
— I can't say about the excess weight yet. Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow we will take measurements, so in a couple of days I will know who is overweight. The overall impression of the team is pleasant. On the first day, everyone wants to show themselves to the new coach. This is a normal phenomenon.
— Will you monitor the nutrition of the players? Does the ban on sugar continue to exist?
— Since yesterday, the diet has changed a little bit, and the players should stick to it. What they will do outside the base is their own business. We won't send the police after them. But at least here they should understand that this is a sports base, this is their health and their opportunity to play better. And whatever you understand, sugar is possible, but the fact that they say that I forbid everything and they feed me here like in prison is nonsense.
— Will there be a single vertical in Dynamo, starting with the Academy, so that all teams play according to the same system?
— I am generally against the fact that football players at 10-12 years old play according to some scheme. They should play football as they please. While they are growing up, this scheme may change with the arrival of another coach. The main thing is that they know how to handle the ball and run fast – in a nutshell.
— Have you talked to Pavel Alpatov, the head coach of Dynamo-2, which rose to the Gold of the Second League? Are you planning to let young people rent more, or is playing for Dynamo-2 a good practice for them?
— Yes, we talked with Pasha when they returned from Vladivostok. Before that, we talked about the players before their departure. Not all football players are the same: someone can be given to get more playing practice or practice at a different level, and someone should be left under our supervision.

— Dynamo has very talented young people. How many young players will go through training camps with the base? Will you give them a chance, based on high tasks? What do you think about Victor Okishor?
— I don't know if they can be considered young. Last season they already played and trained with the first team. So calling them young is no longer quite right. The fact that they can play for Dynamo-2 and get practice there is good. How often this happens will depend on the calendar of the first and second teams. Perhaps someone else will be involved during the season. Okishor is a very promising and interesting football player. His non-standard moves are visible. How he will be able to adapt to men's football will need to be seen. It will take some time.
— Yaroslav Gladyshev in your national team played as a right winger. Konstantin Tyukavin is injured now, Carrascal is late. Who will start the season at Dynamo as a center forward, and do you need another forward?
— We have only Maouhoub as a profile forward. There are young guys we will look at, as well as Carrascal, if he returns. Probably, one more striker would not hurt.
— If Gladyshev and Tyukavin are in the ranks, which of them will you release?
— The two of them will go out if they are okay and win the competition. They should play together. As for me, they are not competitors with each other.
— In what position do you see Diego Laxalt?
— Based on the current squad, there is a large selection of players in the center of the field: Glebov, Fomin, Chavez, Alexandrov, Smelov, Bitello, Carrascal, Gagnidze will return. On the left, only Skopintsev and Laxalt are in defense. Yes, Fernandez can play there, but there are still two specialized left-backs. So now I consider him as a player on the left flank of the defense.

— Milan Majstorovic has returned to the general group. Are you counting on him in the new season?
— There were two training sessions yesterday, so we'll see how he reacts to the load. Now it is difficult to say what form he is in. If he's healthy, then, of course, I'm counting on it.
— Are you satisfied with the goalkeeper team?
— So far, yes, we haven't conceded a single goal yet (smiles).
— You have always had a special relationship with Dmitry Skopintsev. Have you talked to him yet? What is his future in the team?
— As in all other teams, everything depends on him. Already yesterday we had a "special" relationship with him – he tried to tease me (smiles).
— You did not give the collections additional rest days. Will Luis Chavez and Luka Gagnidze also return immediately after international tournaments?
— Yes, right away. What should they rest from? For example, Chavez has been training since mid–January - six months have passed. Teams from the championships, where there are no two pauses, play for 11 months without a break. For example, Valverde has already played 65 matches – this is about 6000 minutes. Our players play 3,000 minutes – that is, two times less. There is no such holiday as ours anywhere in the world. So I don't really understand what they should rest from.
— Do you believe that Dynamo will become the champion?
— If I didn't believe in it, I probably wouldn't have started coaching. I believe we will win every game. And if we do this, we will absolutely become champions. We will believe in it.
