Dynamo newcomer Josue Casimir spoke about his football career, playing at the World Cup and making his debut in Russia.
– You spent your childhood in Guadeloupe, a small island in the Caribbean, how did you develop a love for football?
– I started playing football at the age of 6 in my neighborhood. I have an older brother who was also a professional footballer, so he seriously influenced my choice and my career.
– So, did you know from childhood that you would become a professional football player, or were there other interests?
– I didn't know if I would succeed or not, but I always tried to do my best to become a professional footballer.
– How did you manage to move to France at the age of 15? How difficult was it to adapt there?
– I trained at the sports center, and there were periodic screenings, which were attended by specialists from France. And one day Daniel Congre invited me to Le Havre, where I moved. At first it was very difficult, because it was the first time I left my native country without my parents and friends. And it was difficult to adapt to a new country.
– You spent almost 10 years in France, was it hard to decide on a change of scenery? Is the adaptation process easier this time?
– Of course, but it still takes time to fully adapt to the new environment. It's good that I have a lot of great people around me who help me.
– Your brother played for the Guadeloupe national team, why didn't he follow in his footsteps and chose Haiti in the end?
– I have two cultures in my blood. My parents are from Haiti, but we lived in Guadeloupe. I think that my Haitian part is still stronger, which predetermined my choice.
– What did the first World Cup appearance in 52 years mean for Haiti?
– It was very important for the country that was at war. It was important for people, many of whom live in poverty, so that they could rally and rejoice at this event.
– What are your vivid impressions of the game at the World Cup?
– The most vivid impression is that we managed to unite the whole family, who attended all our matches. Participation in the World Cup is certainly one of the most important events in my life, which will forever remain in my memory.
– Your teammate Wilson Isidor played in Russia for two years. Did you consult with him before joining Dynamo?
– Yes, we talked, but I had already made my choice by that time. He told me about his life here, interesting places to visit.
– You’ve provided an assist in each of your first two matches — are you happy with how you’ve started?
– I’m not 100% satisfied yet. I’m confident that my best performances are still to come. The most important thing is that the club has faith in me, so everything else will fall into place.
– Both the Rubin and Akhmat matches involved a lot of physical duels. The upcoming derby against CSKA will likely be different — more open and attacking. Which type of game do you feel more comfortable in?
– I’m a professional, so it makes no difference to me; I adapt to any circumstances. My job is to go out onto the pitch and give 100% in every single match.
– What are your initial impressions of the Russian league? Do you know anything about your next opponent?
– It’s a very strong league; every match is played at a high intensity. I know that CSKA is a good attacking side, but, first and foremost, we need to focus on our own game.
– You’ve played in various positions throughout your career. How comfortable do you feel playing on the left side of the attack, as you have in these first two matches?
– I’ve played on the left quite often—both in the academy and throughout my professional career — so I feel comfortable there. In fact, I can play on the left, on the right, as a central striker, or as a ‘number ten,’ so I’d describe myself as a versatile player.
– How do you like working with Sandro Schwarz? How much have you already accepted his ideas?
– I am very close to his football philosophy, which implies a lot of intensity both in training and in games. This style suits me very well.
– The team won 8 victories in a row for the first time in 30 years, what kind of atmosphere reigns in the team now? Does this series have a ceiling?
– With such a team and such players, we can achieve much more than 8 wins in a row. But now all our focus is on the game with CSKA, after which we will think about the next match.
– How do you cope with the language barrier in the team, because none of the players speak French?
– Everything is not as problematic as I imagined. I have enough of my English and Spanish, plus a translator helps me, so there are no problems.
– Recently you turned 25 years old, how did you celebrate in Russia? What wish did you make?
– I celebrated well. I made a wish to perform as successfully as possible this season and win titles.
