In the 1950s, he was considered the most promising midfielder in the USSR. He compensated for his lack of physical strength with impeccable positional play, outstanding technique and unprecedented tenacity. After a serious injury, he was out for three years, but was able to return to the main team and became one of the most interesting attacking midfielders of the second half of the 1950s.
On the field, he stood out because he almost never lost the fight for the ball, although he did not have outstanding physical characteristics. First of all, he chose his position wisely, skillfully covering the ball with his body. In attack, he acted super-effectively, making incisive passes to his partners, often bringing them into a striking position. He had a signature strike: he hit with both feet with almost no swing or preparation, and the ball flew right into the corner along a creeping trajectory.
He continued his football career as a coach. In 1967, he worked in Cuba, where he headed the national team. Afterwards he moved to the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kremlin Commandant’s Office.
