Team status
Dynamo lost 1-0 to Krasnodar in a cup match this week, again squandering numerous scoring chances and taking 20 shots. Milan Majstorovic and Luis Chavez started for the first time since May. The Serbian defender played the entire half, while the Mexican midfielder was substituted in the 54th minute.
"I was pleased to see how the team played and that they were making progress, but it's disappointing to see a defeat. We must analyze this match and continue to move forward: develop our style of play, dominate every match, press, create many chances, and not dwell on missed opportunities. We completely changed the starting lineup compared to the match in St. Petersburg, and I'm very pleased with the boys' attitude. Now we need to distribute the workload and find the ideal lineup for Sunday," Sandro Schwarz said after the match.
Andrei Lunev, Bakhtiyor Zaynutdinov, Alexander Kutitsky, and Daniil Fomin will not play for medical reasons. According to Schwarz, Nicolas Marichal's participation is also in question.
About the opponent
Rodina was founded by Russian entrepreneur Sergey Lomakin in 2015, and four years later, it began playing professional football. Remarkably, three players from that roster currently play for the team in the Premier League: goalkeeper Sergey Aidarov, defender Dmitry Shadrintsev, and forward Magomedkhabib Abdusalamov.
From the very beginning, the team was coached by renowned former footballers: Denis Laktionov, Dmitry Parfenov, Vladimir Beschatnykh, and Denis Boyarintsev, who led the team to the First League in 2022. There, Rodina enjoyed four solid seasons, never dropping below seventh place, and in May, they became champions and earned promotion to the Russian Premier League.
This achievement occurred under the guidance of Spanish coach Juan Diaz, who, before coming to Russia, had coached only Sevilla's youth teams and served as the administrator of the first team. Despite his limited experience, he managed to rally the players and instill in them an aggressive, attacking style of football, which yielded results – Rodina became the league's top-scoring team, and Artem Maksimenko led the scoring race with 17 goals.
The 28-year-old striker has already made a name for himself in the Russian Premier League – in the last round, he scored a hat-trick against Akron, scoring two goals with stunning long-range strikes. Rodina, who led for most of the match, was unable to hold on to the win and settled for a 3-3 draw. However, this point and a sensational 2-1 away win over Zenit allow the Muscovites to remain above the playoff zone, despite disappointing opening games against Spartak (0-3) and Rostov (2-4).
It's worth noting that the team's roster remained virtually unchanged this summer. There are only three newcomers: Real Madrid and Manchester City alumnus Iker Pozo, former Orenburg and Akhmat striker Brian Mansilla, and forward German Onugha, who has played in Israel, Denmark, and Turkey in recent years.
The team's results in the Russian Cup have been polarizing so far: in the first round, they crushed Rubin Kazan 5-0, and on Tuesday, they suffered a heavy home defeat to Orenburg (1-4). However, the Muscovites were already playing with one man down after the sixth minute following Andrei Egorychev's sending-off.
Intersections
The defender of the blue and whites Stanislav Bessmertniy has been playing for Rodina for the second season in a row on loan.
Forward Artem Maksimenko has been training at the Dynamo Academy for three years.
Rodina defender Leo Goglichidze and Daniil Fomin are alumni of the Krasnodar Academy and played together for their second team.
The judges
The match will be officiated by Evgeny Bulanov along with linesmen Andrei Bolotenkov and Denis Bereznov. Sergey Tsyganok and Pavel Shadykhanov will be responsible for the video Referee Assistance System (VAR).
Last season, the 37-year-old referee from Saransk worked only at one blue-and-whites' match against Dynamo Makhachkala (3:0).
